Hello, I'm a newbie on this forum. I helped my son Matt purchase a '95 black Lsi in the spring of '07. Matt is 21, working and trying to go back to school to advance his career in computers. I'm the old man and a shade tree mechanic.  Matt loves his SVX, as any red blooded young man would. But we both are crying the blues today. The car started a severe clunking and shudder yesterday. We had it towed home, and I will pull out the wrenches this weekend. I am suspecting the driveshaft at a minimum. Hoping that differentials and other $$ parts are ok. Any ideas or moral support is welcome!

Hello and welcome.:)

Sounds like you could have just experienced a front differential failure.:(

Let me know what you find out and maybe I can help.;)

you're right, Matt should get into this discussion too. I'm here to help him out, but he needs to ramp up his knowledge on his car as well.

We got the wrenches out today on Matt's 95 SVX. Unfortunately your guess was correct. Drained the front diff and metal particles and broken blue plastic gears (speedo drive? speed sensor drive?) were visible up in the diff.  What is out there for parts to replace/repair this diff? We will talk to Subaru and call local salvage yards this week.

Get a 4.44 gear swap. Its the best choice. Its strong and more realible. Its a 97 legacy tranny. talk to budfrak he can hook you up.

So then can the front differential be fixed/replaced and then all will be well again? I see a lot of pushing towards a tranny swap but is that because of price to get this fixed in general or strictly performance? Maybe a bit of both?

I'm ignorant on the fact so maybe someone can chime in and give a better explanation on the subject at hand in what is involved and such. :)

With doing a front diff swap and staying stock your looking at 2 problems.

1. You don't know what happened to the tranny internally due to the diff breaking and it's a gamble.

2. COST. Most shops wants an arm and leg to do a front diff swap and for the price you could be getting a much more reliable transmission installed that will also increase performance greatly. Plus, if not installed and setup right it will go back out in a short amount of time.

It's just MUCH easier and economical to do a 4.44 swap over replacing a stock front diff on a tranny that might just break again 10K miles down the road.

I base all this on the fact I have not seen or heard of a 4.44 failing yet after doing over a dozen of them myself plus all the other ones that have been done, except for the one I cracked the front diff case on drag racing.:p

We decided to jump into the gear oil with both feet.   Matt bought '97 Legacy 2.5 trans and rear diff from a local yard. (4.44 gears on both). We are pulling the dead 4EAT in his '95 SVX today.  Transmission swap looks straight up.  Don't have rear diff out yet, will need to figure out mods required to swap diff as we go.

The tranny swap is straight forward and you just need to swap the speed sensor, exhaust hanger, and transmission mount.

With the rear diff you will need to swap the LSD carrier from the stock SVX rearend into the Legacy rearend which just requires a quick swap of the ring gears and the grinding down of 4 nubs inside the Legacy diff to allow the SVX carrier to fit inside. Make sure you use the SVX bearing caps also.

Good luck.

We finished the 4.44 swap this past weekend, and all seems well. In fact, better than the original setup. The lower gear ratio makes the SVX more responsive and gives better acceleration. Budfreak's help was right on, we couldn't have done the rear differential mod without it. It was a bit of work, we only worked on car on weekends, and just finished before winter slush hit here in Minnesota. A few things that we learned along the way..

yes, you have to remove the alternator to remove the transmission. I tried to remove flexplate to torque converter bolts from below, and it doesn't work. There is an inspection port under the throttle body to access these bolts by using a 20" extension from the front of the engine.

check the position of the dowel pins before you install your new trans. I didn't, and after two hours of manuevering the new trans into position, had a pin-on-pin situation that prevented bolt-up. was just able to remove one pin  without completely dropping new trans out of position.

Chilton book says to pull rear hub links and axles, etc. to remove rear diff. --not necessary. If your drive shaft is out of the way, remove rear diff mounting bolts and lower slowly on jack, rotating forward slightly to clear out of back mount. When diff is low enough, axles can be gently pried out of diff and unit freed up. Install is reverse of process.

Matt's 95 LSi bleeds power steering fluid. we removed and reinstalled the reservoir with black RTV, and replaced the return hose to the reservoir. seems to stop the bleeding.

thanks again to Jason for this forum and good information--  MattsDad
